But how will we sell popcorn?

Blockbuster leaders wanted to buy Netflix early on, but powerful franchisees didn’t. If people ordered DVDs from home, they wouldn’t come to Blockbuster stores where 50 percent of the revenue came from add-ons like popcorn and movie posters. Bad idea. Netflix ate their popcorn, I mean lunch.

Years later Netflix tried to become a one-stop shop of distribution and production, hoping to take on all of Hollywood with tons of titles. But people wanted more choice ā€” increased competition and inflation battered the stock last year.

If you think you can’t take on leaders in a market, any market, you can with enough time and patience. It seems like they always eventually make an error in judgment based on trying to control a market rather than meeting customer needs.
