Maple Syrup, Chicken and Quilts
I became curious about the US School of Music in the classic Caples ad.

I didn’t realize they were so popular, and endured battles like when Collier’s Weekly called them a “swindle.” US School of Music promptly sued.
Even more amazing, a giant of American music almost bought part of the company in the 1950s.

In the Depression, some students paid with “maple syrup, chickens, and quilts.”
In a 1975 press release, the company stated that while piano was the instrument of choice for many years, now it was the guitar.
In 1981, they ceased operation due to lower demand for non-tech correspondence courses, but they left no student behind. The completed the courses for all remaining students, and took on no new ones.
You know today a company would have just locked the doors and not told anybody!
